friday, friday night

If you want a bread twist on a slow January Friday night from The Pizza Factory then you might end up going through Fat Cats to get there. And once your senses have adjusted to the black lights and ear exploding music then you might think this thing I thought- I am glad my hormones are no longer flying through the air of loud bowling alleys. While in the long run those boy crazy weekends of jr. high were probably important to my young development, it is a relief to walk past the lanes of sweaty teenagers and know those days are far, far behind me.

Not something that changes with age though...how much fun it is to cram too many faces in the too small space of a photo booth.

Or deciding to celebrate Kristina's leap year 7th (28th) birthday doing it again tonight. I'm taking lots of quarters.

pants yell: update

Problem solved.

The real issue with the pants was the bottom half, they were just barely too short which was incredibly annoying. No more bottom half, no more problem. I am so smart.

Up

Why at midnight and with only a page and a half left to write for a midterm paper due in the morning do I keep distracting myself with other things? Because in the last hour I've made little paper progress but I have:

-designed a Timbuk2 bag on the Timbuk2 site (for now I picked grey, green and a maroon for my panel colors)
-addressed a letter
-checked my google reader 1 million times
-messed around with my iTunes library
-checked my e-mail
-gotten distracted over and over halfway through I Grieve because it's on repeat and it's so beautiful when Peter Gabriel sings:

"I GRIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE.....for you. And yoooooou LEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAVE.....me."

man, the heartache.
( then I also love near the end, the last time he's like "life carries on and on AND on and on, life carries on and on, AND on" and it splits into cool harmonies)
-blog

And this quick little paper about the non-nutritional goals of punk cuisine at a vegan cafe in Seattle is pretty interesting so it's not that I'm bored with my subject. I just can't seem to do anything I'm supposed to do, when I'm supposed to do it.

pants yell

I hate the pants I'm wearing today. I know I hate them but every now and then I pull them out of my closet and standing in front of my bedroom mirror, I convince myself they aren't that bad. But they are that bad and I remember it once I start walking around much, which of course, is always too late. Will I put them in my Deseret Industries bag when I get home though? Probably not, I'll reconvince myself they aren't that bad and keep them around.

Duh.

the obeisant vine

Today has been a bizarre weather day. Rain has fallen a couple of times ranging from heavy pours to quick cloud spits. On my way to work on the freeway that hugs the Wasatch mountains, I went through a weird looking, misty, fog and the road ahead looked like it was going to lead me to Mordor or something. A while ago the sun was shining bright as if to flip the bird at the overcast that has mostly dominated and right now there are enough kinds of clouds outside my window to make a science teacher's head explode.

It kind of feels like this.

I'm cycling through all the calm and peaceful music I have because this week I've got two midterms and an assignment due and not really enough hours in each day to do them (never think that waiting until you're 26 to graduate college is a good idea).

shake your rump

Some friends talked me into going to hip hop night at a local club last night. I accepted because it had been a long time since I'd done such a thing. My freshman and sophomore years of college my friend Cora and I hit up a weekly 80s night pretty much every week. We'd dance with the energy of 19 year old girls at a club and talk lots about the cute boys we'd see there with regularity (who I believe actually also danced with the energy of 19 year old girls). Up until I left for Armenia it was a weekly highlight, I think in part because not really during the school or work day does Billy Idol blare overhead giving opportunity to shake it.

In the years since I've been back from Armenia I've gone a handful of times, but as is always the case when you take off out of the country for a year or so, the scene changed as friends and familiar faces drifted out and new people made it their regular Thursday thing. And that's fine by me because the shift away from club appeal happened naturally and now in the middle or end of a busy week going dancing sounds about as appealing as a Hannah Montana concert (which is to say, not really appealing at all). But every now and then the bug bites and I was glad I gave into it yesterday. Because until I'm actually on the dance floor, my old tired body forgets that the most fun part of those millions of Thursdays was laughing in a crowd of people I know and getting totally blown away by the dance skillzzz you find your friends have once you're in a dark room surrounded by mostly strangers. Plus uhhh, Outkast remixes and The Notorious B.I.G.? Yes please.

So I think I might loosely plan on this Thursday dance night again. The bartender set out on the bar 10 glasses of water with neon straws so how can you pass up that kind of treatment? Waking up today wasn't as difficult as I expected it would be with the late night (yes it was), but who am I kidding cus I probably would have been awake until 1:00 anyway reading blogs. And if I work in a couple of squats into my bag of moves I figure I can totally count it as working out. Win/win.

In honor of then and now.

ANTM

Beginning today, Wednesdays are special days because they are once again Tyra days. To celebrate the return of America's Next Top Model, Danny made everyone a present.

I can't wait.

white people

it's funny because it's true you see.

strawberry shortcake

Jacob came for a visit this weekend and it was really great to see him. We didn't really take any pictures so just before he left on Sunday I took this one.

Looking at it I realized two things:
1. my sunglasses are ridiculous
2. Jacob is like my own handsome Peculiar Purple Pie Man of Porcupine Peak

katie ka-boom

When the cartoon Animaniacs was around, one of the recurring characters was a teenager named Katie Ka-boom. She was dramatic and overreacted to very small issues and at the end of the cartoon she would explode (it was hilarious). In our house we thought it was funny because we had a Katie who could sometimes, maybe, occasionally get a bit emotional. And perhaps that still rings a bit true, but this week she did a very, very brave thing and moved across the country (for her third time no less), from the beach and friends to a place with acquaintances and months of winter left. So seems like in that situation anyone would feel a little ka-boom...

I'm just glad the move meant she stopped by us on her way, cus I like being around as many siblings as possible at all times.

I Feel It All

Feist videos are fantastic because they look like how 10 years old see the world which, coincidentally, is also the best age for Valentine's Day celebrations (though I'm going to see 'Step Up 2: The Streets' tonight so maybe 26 is really the magic year).

Bathroom 1, Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta

I have an irrational fear of people walking in on me in the bathroom.  This preoccupation is amplified in public places where the awkwardness is potentially compounded by the strangerness.

'oh hello random woman sitting at the table next to me...apparently I forgot to lock the door.'

Truthfully that hasn't ever really happened to me, but my brain tells me it could happen. And I would be especially embarrassed if walked in on while in a bathroom that is uncomfortably large, like the one at Salt Lake Pizza & Pasta for instance.

It's like 12 feet from door to toilet. How terrifying.

sunday sun

In the middle of every season I forget the next one is coming.  But today was one of those days that reminded me the winter will melt away soon.

And then we're only a few months away from Saturdays at Christopher and Tasha's pool with too-big-for-your-own-good sized sodas from Sonic.
